Dear Senator Kutcher:

We are writing to support your efforts to have Section 43 of the CCC repealed.

In 1991 Canada ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) promising that Canada would protect children against violence.

Section 43 breaks that promise by allowing children to be subjected to physical punishment and, in fact, making that punishment legal.

There is significant data demonstrating that physical punishment creates serious harm both short and long term and there is little evidence of any positive benefits.

Countries across the world have banned violence against children. When a small African country like Zambia has banned corporal punishment against children, how do we justify keeping Section 43 in place in Canada, a country that takes pride in being one of the first countries to adopt and ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Children?

It is time to stop this violence against our children!

Thank you for your commitment to repeal Section 43. We stand with you.
